News from the National Federations.
Saint Petersburg, Russia, July 8, 2013. The annual Beach Volleyball festival was held this past weekend on one of the most charming beaches in northwestern Russia, right on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, some 40 km from Saint Petersburg. More than 500 teams – starring juniors, seniors, amateurs and professionals, athletes with disabilities, journalists and VIPs – joined the event as 28 Beach Volleyball courts were set up for the occasion.
The youngest player was 10 years old while the oldest was 92. Apart from the Beach Volleyball tournament, the participants could join many other contests prepared by the organizers who did distribute – throughout the weekend – more than 200 gifts and prizes (cups, medals, t-shirts, and other memorabilia). The players participating in the professional tournament embarked on a run for 200’000 rubles prize money (around 4,700 €). The participants had found their way not only from different regions in Russia, but also from neighboring Finland. A mixed duo – Russia’s Andrey Belov had teamed up with US American Adam Roberts – starred in the main tournament. The festival included also beach tennis and foot volley competitions, the latter claimed by a group of Brazilians. Another similar festival is scheduled for this coming weekend – July 13-14 – in Velikiy Novgorod.
